Toolkit

Localy is centred on the development of an innovative toolkit designed specifically for non-formal learning: it will be handson, allowing young people to engage in experiential learning and to act within their communities.

Youth workers will be trained and will support the piloting of the Localy toolkit with 5 groups across 4 countries. The impacts of the pilot (learning, awareness-raising, environmental impacts) will be evaluated, to support the broad dissemination of the Localy toolkit.

Training

This training aimed to enhance the ability of youth workers to guide and support young people in designing and implementing self-initiated, community-based environmental projects. There were 18 participants from Italy, Germany, Greece, and Spain, as well as three trainers: the training was structured around a “learning by experience” approach, in which participants took part in sessions that mirror the process they will use when implementing environmental projects with their own groups.

The training covered topics such as:

  • Community building and care
  • Identifying and reflecting upon feelings and emotions that emerge from the climate crisis
  • Systemic thinking and how it can be applied to youth work and community-based interventions
  • The different roles we undertake in the context of climate-related actions
  • How to conduct youth work in a way that acknowledges diversity and takes into account the particular characteristics of each individual.

During the training participants were able to share their needs and expectations, explore the local area, identify their personal drive for attending the training, and discover their own internal confidence and potential.

By the end of this training participants were able to adapt the training process to their own work with young people and create impact and bring positive change forward, while also becoming part of a network of youth workers across countries.

The training, which was organized by the non-governmental, environmental organization Biodiversa, aimed to train youth workers from LOCALY’s project partner countries on a tailor-made toolkit, produced by NaturFreundeJugend, Berlin.

Podcast

Through the voices of the youth workers on the ground, we explore the real-world impact of LOCALY, from overcoming obstacles to celebrating crucial wins. We also delve into the powerful role of ‘Climate Emotions’, understanding how these feelings drive, and sometimes challenge, their vital work. Join us to experience the inspiring journey of a project that’s shaping the future of environmental action, one local project at a time.

In this episode, we introduce the LOCALY project, launched in 2024 to empower young people to mitigate environmental problems within their local communities, develop tools for local change and train youth workers across four countries—Spain, Greece, Germany, and Italy. Our guests, junior youth workers, share firsthand insights into the project's implementation, the challenges they've faced, and the impactful moments they've encountered in diverse European communities. Tune in for an inspiring discussion on the different approaches and local contexts shaping this initiative.

In this episode, we explore Climate Emotions—the complex feelings tied to perceptions of climate change—and their impact on youth workers. Our guests share personal experiences from diverse geographic backgrounds, discussing how these emotions shape their work and the young people they support. The conversation also highlights practical strategies for navigating climate anxiety and transforming emotions into meaningful action.
